September Is the OTHER New Year: Here's How To Use It

The kids are back in school, the grill’s cooling down, and the sun’s setting a little earlier. Maybe, just maybe, your body is over the beers and brats.

Welcome to September—aka the “other New Year.”

If January feels like too much pressure (cold, dark, post-holiday crash), September brings us something  different. It’s a return to routine, a craving for structure, and a natural urge to reset. I see it every year in the gym and in the inbox: People are ready to recommit.

And if you’re riding that fresh start energy? Now’s the time to use it.

Why September Works (Even When January Didn’t)

September offers something January can’t: a built-in rhythm.

You’re probably getting up a little earlier. You’ve got real meals again and your weekends are (slightly) less chaotic. Maybe your brain’s craving the kind of order that gets lost between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

When I work with clients, we focus on small, sustainable changes - not all-or-nothing overhauls -  and September is the perfect time to dial in those small shifts.

If you’ve been thinking about hiring a health coach but didn’t want to start when everything felt like chaos? This is your sign. You don’t need perfect timing, you need enough energy to get started.

6 Fresh Starts Inspired By The 6 Pillars Of Health

If you’re not sure where to begin, start here. These simple, doable ideas are based on the six pillars of health I use with every coaching client. You don’t need to tackle all of them! Pick one and build momentum.

1. Hydration: Bring back the water bottle

Start with one glass of water in the morning—before coffee. Add electrolytes if you’re still feeling zapped from summer heat or travel. Keep a water bottle on your desk or in your car again. Most people are walking around 10–15% dehydrated, and it messes with everything from energy to mood.

2. Sleep: Reclaim your bedtime

Summer routines are chaotic. Fall is a chance to get back to consistent wind-down habits. You don’t need a fancy routine—just consistency. Try putting your phone away 30 minutes before bed. Dim the lights, stretch, and pick a bedtime you can stick with 5 days out of 7.

3. Movement: Don’t overthink it—just move

You don’t need to train for a marathon. You need to move in a way that feels good and fits your schedule. Go for walks, do short strength workouts or try a free week at my gym TwinTown Fitness if you’re in the Twin Cites.

(If you want coaching that includes custom movement planning—I’ve got you covered.)

4. Nutrition: Reset your plate, not your whole life

September is the perfect time to simplify meals again. Start by adding protein to breakfast (even if that’s just eggs and toast). Plan a few easy dinners you actually like. Don’t worry about being “perfect”, just focus on building a few reliable go-to meals that help you feel better.

5. Mindset: Swap the scroll for 5 minutes of silence

This one’s a game-changer. Put your phone face-down. Set a timer. Breathe. Think. Journal if you want or just sit with your thoughts. You don’t have to turn into a monk, you just need to get reacquainted with your own brain.

6. Growth: Align your actions with what matters most

September is a natural time to pause and ask, What am I working toward? For some folks, it's building strength. For others, it's improving their relationship with food, being more present with family, or managing stress better.

Accountability Is a Superpower And We’re Making It Easier

We all like to think we’ll follow through on our goals with just a podcast, a planner, and some good intentions.

But real talk? Most of us need accountability.

That’s why I’m running a September coaching promotion to make it even easier to get started—and bring a friend along for the ride.

Sign up for health coaching with a friend, spouse, or adult child and you’ll each get $500 off.

You get:

  • Custom coaching tailored to your life (not someone else’s)

  • Support across all 6 pillars of health

  • Flexible scheduling and accountability that actually works

  • A coach who’s been there—and isn’t here to shame you

But now? You get to do it with someone—and save a serious chunk of change while you’re at it.

You Don’t Need Another “All In” Month, You Just Need To Start

Here’s what I’ve seen over and over again: the people who succeed aren’t the ones with perfect plans. They’re the ones who start—and stick with it.

Maybe you need to rein in the late night doom scrolling. Maybe you just want to feel like you have your sh*t together again. Maybe you’ve never hired a health coach before and you’re curious what it could do for you.

Wherever you’re at, September is a great time to begin.

You can grab a spot on my calendar to chat here or forward this to a friend who’s also ready for a reset—you’ll both save $500 when you sign up together.

Let’s get you moving, grounded, and feeling good again. Fall’s calling. You in?
