Why FEELING Good Matters More Than Looking Good

If you're reading this, there's a good chance you're not here to become a bodybuilder or a fitness influencer. You just want to feel good in your body. Maybe you want energy, confidence, and ease. Maybe a little less pain when you wake up in the morning.

And if you're someone who's new to personal training or health coaching, I want to let you in on a little secret: the biggest wins aren’t always visible from the outside.

Let me tell you about my client Jean.

Jean is 85. She’s smart, stylish, hilarious—and fiercely committed to showing other women what’s possible at any age. Jean and I started working together a few months ago. She wasn’t interested in six-pack abs or dropping a certain number on the scale. Her goal? Regain strength and mobility in her shoulder so she could do her own hair again. She wanted to build core strength to improve her balance and feel more solid in her body.

And she’s doing it! Slowly, steadily, we’ve increased her mobility, her stamina, her strength—and her confidence.

You can’t always see those changes in a mirror. But you can feel them, and those are the changes that matter most.

The Problem With “Looking Healthy”

We live in a culture that’s obsessed with how health looks: flat stomachs, toned arms, a number on a scale.

But real health doesn’t always look like a before-and-after photo.

Sometimes, it looks like being able to get off the floor without help, finally sleeping through the night, or walking up stairs without pain.

A 2022 study found that older adults who focused on function—strength, balance, and endurance—reported higher life satisfaction than those who focused on appearance. The same study noted improvements in overall health markers and lower instances of depressive symptoms when people focused on what their bodies could do, not just what they looked like.

Plenty of people look "fit" but feel terrible and plenty of people in larger bodies have incredible endurance, strength, and resilience.

So if you’ve been waiting to start your health journey until you’re at the “right weight” or until you “look better,” please don’t. You’re allowed to want to feel good now.

Building Strength, Not Shrinking

When Jean and I started working together, she told me, “I want to be strong and mobile enough to do my own hair again.”

That might sound like a small goal, but it’s actually huge. It’s about independence, autonomy, and confidence. It’s about being able to do the things that bring you joy and dignity.

Jean has had high-end trainers in the past—including a former NFL trainer. But at 85, she needed someone who understood how to build strength without breaking her down.

We started simple: light resistance, supported squats, and planks on the wall. Then we progressed - 10-second planks became 30. Every week, we build and every week, she shows other women what’s possible.

Feeling good is often quiet and cumulative. You don’t wake up one day and feel like a brand-new person. But after enough little wins stack up, you realize: your life has changed.

Want to feel better in your body? Here are a few out-of-the-box tips:

  1. Use music as a mobility motivator: Pick one song and move gently for the entire track—stretch, sway, squat, reach, whatever feels good.

  2. Pair habits: Drink water while you brush your teeth. Stretch while you microwave your lunch. Over time, these add up.

  3. Keep a "feel good log": Instead of tracking weight or calories, jot down how you felt after movement, food, or sleep. Did it energize you? Relax you? Make you feel proud?
